Brian Pompeii: This Island Life  Brian Pompeii host’s This Island Life every Wednesday evening at 6:30pm. This Island Life covers all the activities of local organizations including the Ocracoke Preservation Society, the National Park Service, the County Commissioners Meetings, the Civic and Business Association, the Ocracoke Foundation, and others. Brian highlights all of the important portions of weekly meetings in an exciting manner so you don’t have to spend hours attending long meetings every week. Each week also includes an aurally immersive segment where you might find yourself playing bingo at the fire hall, crabbing with the Park Service, fishing off-shore, listening to a photograph, or biting into a fresh fig.

Brian earned a bachelor’s of science degree in Geography from Penn State, a master’s in Geography from Arizona State, and is currently pursuing his doctoral degree from Arizona State. During his tour of academia Brian served as a research scientist for three years at a National Science Foundation funded organization, The Decision Center for a Desert City, where he worked to bridge university scientists with local decision-makers to encourage sustainable water-use practices in the Phoenix metropolitan area. He also taught courses at the university level in environmental science, sustainability science, water resource technologies and physical geography. In 2010, Brian was invited as a visiting scholar by the City University of New York and the National Science Foundation to collaborate with an interdisciplinary research team to quantify the impacts of human activities on the hydrological system of the northeastern United States.

Even with all of these experiences Brian is not your average college-boy, he has held several jobs in various sectors, including working in a pressed-metals factory, hot-tar roofing, guiding tourists through an underwater cave, washing dishes, waiting tables, bagging groceries, mapping forest fires, etc. In-between all of these jobs and studies he has also found time to gracefully gallivant around the country. Brian has been to all the states except four (North Dakota, Nebraska, Kansas, and Iowa), and has driven across the county more than twelve times. On three occasions he has gone to bed in a different time-zone than the one he woke-up in for five-straight days. He once came within punching distance of a 500 pound black bear. He has been to the Cuban Hip-Hop awards in Havana, watched the Cuban National Ballet in Brazil, ate Brazilian food in Mexico, and drank with Zapatistas in Nicaragua.

This is Brian Pompeii, welcome to This Island Life.
