WOVV’s journey began in 2007, when a group of Ocracoke residents united around a shared vision: to create a community radio station that would capture and celebrate the island’s unique voice and culture. After two years of careful planning and a successful application process, WOVV officially launched online in 2009 at wovv.org.Just a year later, in 2010, we expanded to the FM airwaves, broadcasting at 90.1 FM.
Our first studio was a small downtown space overlooking the scenic Silver Lake. As our programming and community involvement continued to grow, so did our need for more space. In 2016, we relocated to a larger studio on Back Road, housed on the second floor of the island’s old Fire Station—directly across from the Ocracoke Coffee Company.
Today, WOVV broadcasts a wide variety of music, local news, interviews, and public affairs programming—powered by a passionate team of volunteers and supported by a small, part-time staff. Over the years, we’ve expanded our content to include:
